The Geological museum is responsible for considerably large scientific collections. The mineralogy section of the Finnish Natural History Museum contains about 45, 000 specimens and 35 000 rock and ore samples. At the collections of the Geological Museum there are also about 500 meteorites and 6000 fossils. The oldest part of the Museum's collections consists of the mineral specimens of governor-general Fabian Steinheil (1762-1831). The collections have grown through acquisitions and donations, the most important examples being the collections of crystallographer A. Gadolin and the mineralogists N.G. and A. E. Nordenskiöld. Several renowned professors of Geology, such as Wilhelm Ramsay, Pentti Eskola and Th. G. Sahama, have also contributed to the collections. The Palaeontology Division displays the significant A. von Nordmann collection of fossils discovered in Ukraine and Central Europe, the B. Kurtén collection on the evolution of primates, and large mammoth tusks found in Alaska.
